The YWCA of South Hampton Roads will honor the Lady Monarchs women's basketball team, coaches and staff at the 1997 Winners Dinner Thursday at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
Nancy Lieberman-Cline, who led Old Dominion to two national championships and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996, will be the guest speaker.
Proceeds will go to the YWCA's shelter for battered women, the latchkey child-care program and the early breast and cervical cancer detection outreach and education program. Tickets may be obtained at the YWCA located on 253 W. Freemason St., Norfolk, or by calling 625-4248.
Marlins report
The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team ranks among the league's best in the latest Old Dominion Athletic Conference statistics report. The Marlins are first in team batting and scoring, sixth in fielding (.921) and have three of the top 10 hitters. Chris Lemore is fifth, batting .469. Lemore ranks second in doubles (7 in 13 games), sixth in home runs (3), seventh in RBIs (16) and second in slugging percentage (.776). Colin Jones is sixth in batting with a attempts); Robbie Moose is ninth in batting with a .418 average. Kevin Flanagan is third in RBIs with 18 in 19 games, first in triples (4) and fourth in slugging percentage (.739). . . . Lisa Newnam (Lake Taylor) is among the ODAC softball leaders. Newnam, a senior, is third in batting (.490), first in RBIs (15), third in doubles (4), sixth in triples (2) and third in slugging percentage (.673). Monica Saltarelli leads the ODAC in doubles with six in 15 games.
Alumni update
William and Mary freshman Robert Jones (Churchland) has stepped into the role as the baseball team's designated hitter, appearing in 20 games with 10 starts. Jones is hitting .308 with six RBIs. He also has made seven appearances on the mound. . . . The Tribe pinch hitters are batting a combined Michigan's Chris Viola (Western Branch) nearly pulled off the NCAA wrestling tournament's biggest upset in the first round before losing a 9-7 sudden-death overtime decision to No. 2 seeded Teague Moore of Oklahoma State. Viola rebounded with three straight wins before falling in the All-American round to Michigan State's third-seeded David Morgan. The redshirt freshman, who wrestled the majority of the season with a shoulder injury and will have reconstructive surgery, finished 26-11 and is 57-26 overall for the Wolverines. . . . . Heather Wentzel (Virginia Beach) is tied for fifth on the Longwood women's lacrosse team with five interceptions . . . Walt Bondurant (Nansemond-Suffolk) pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight, to earn his first win of the season for Hampden-Sydney. . . . Cornell senior Carlos Eason (Chesapeake) earned the wrestling team's James Meldrim '63 Memorial Award for outstanding character, sportsmanship, scholarship and contribution to the wrestling program. The two-time All-Ivy selection finished with a 29-4 record at 190 pounds, was undefeated in dual meets for the second straight year, won his third consecutive New York State title and placed fifth at the EIWA Championships.
