Military veterans who qualify for employment preferences could not be denied the chance to compete for jobs in the federal government under terms of a bill the House passed Wednesday.
The measure, sent to the Senate, also gives veterans already on the federal payroll added protection during layoffs.
The new bill would shore up the Veterans' Preference Act, which was passed in 1944. Testimony during committee hearings suggested that it often is ignored or circumvented.
