Violet Hicks Massengill, 89, died April 10, 1997, in a local nursing home. Mrs. Massengill was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Massengill.

She is survived by her three daughters, Susan M. Evans of Virginia Beach, Coran M. Sawyer of Washington, N.C., and Preston M. Allen of Asheville, N.C.; sister, Pat Jay of Florida; brother, Douglas Johnson of North Carolina; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held in Smithfield, N.C., at a later date. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
