NAMELESS BAND MIXES MUSICAL STYLES FOR SOME LOCAL CLUBS

Hard-driving, funky and unpredictable is what the Burlington, Vermont-based quintet ``Currently Nameless'' is all about.

The group swings across the Outer Banks this week for a series of club dates (Wednesday and Thursday at Kelly's in Nags Head and Friday at Howard's Pub in Ocracoke) before heading to Fernandina Beach, Florida for the group's southernmost gig of their 18-month existence.

``Currently Nameless,'' who tours mostly in New England, first played Howard's Pub a few months ago - by accident.

``We were camping on Ocracoke,'' says drummer/singer Daemmon Hughes.

``I just took a tape by Howard's. They liked it and told us to come back the next night.''

The four-song tape showcases the band's ability to use catchy melodies and five-part harmony singing to hold together a rather open approach to music.

``Our music is eclectic,'' Hughes says. ``We like to jam.''

Think of Santana jamming with The Beatles and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

``Currently Nameless'' - guitarists Josh Keller, Dave Simpson, John Treybal and lead singer Sean Daley - has about 40 original songs in the band's reportoire. Toss in about a dozen cover tunes (``Barbara Ann,'' ``Ghostbusters,'' ``Crosstown Traffic``). Then give these groove guys some room.

``We definitely like to wing it from time to time,'' Hughes says. ``Maybe 30 to 40 percent of the songs you wouldn't hear the same way twice.''

As for the group's name, it was supposed to be temporary.

But now it may say a lot about the band.

``A band's name can categorize the music,'' Hughes says. ``We don't want to do that.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
