JONES NAMED TO BANKING COMMITTEE: U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-3rd Dist., was today named to the U.S. House Committee on Banking and Financial Services. The committee has jurisdiction over financial service issues, as well as housing and community development programs.

``This is a great plus for eastern North Carolina,'' said Jones. ``The banking and financial services industries are important to everyone in our state. The banking committee also impacts home ownership and economic development programs that are very important to rural areas in the Third Congressional District of North Carolina.''

Jones also is a member of the House National Security and Resources Committees.

KILL DEVIL HILLS

POETRY WINNER: River Oak Review, a magazine of poetry and fiction, has announced that the winner of the 1997 Poetry Competition is ``Crane Suite,'' a sequence of four poems by Steve Lautermilch of Kill Devil Hills. The poems are dedicated to Sadako Sasaki who, believing that if she folded 1,000 cranes she would be healed of her leukemia, died after folding the 964th crane.

The award, carrying a $500 prize, is given by the editorial staff of River Oak Review, and the winning poem will appear in the spring issue of the magazine.

WATER FLUSHING BEGINS: The Kill Devil Hills Utilities Department will conduct a spring Fire Hydrant Flushing Program beginning the week of April 21. Flushing will begin at Eighth Street and continue toward the north end of Kill Devil Hills, and should be completed during the following week.

Customers may experience a momentary loss of water pressure or temporary water discoloration and should check water color prior to washing clothing.

To find out if flushing is occurring in a specific area, call 480-4080.

ELIZABETH CITY

NCAE NOMINATES OFFICERS: The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank unit of the North Carolina Association of Educators recently nominated officers for the 1997-98 school year.

Jackie Brown will be next year's president. Dorsey Harris was named vice president and president-elect, while Mary Holley will be secretary. Jean Gray will be the treasurer.

Ollie Mason will replace Sandra Hooker as president of the local unit for the remainder of the school year.

Hooker has taken a leave of absence at the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank school system to work for the state.

The local chapter will award two $500 scholarships to Northeastern High School graduating seniors planning a career in education.

A retirement gala is planned for May 30 at the U.S. Coast Guard Officers' Club. All retiring NCAE members in the local school system will be honored.
