SARAH P. ELLIS

Sarah Pittman ``Betty'' Ellis, 85, died April 13, 1997, in a Suffolk nursing home.

The widow of John Carroll Ellis Sr., she was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, the Alpha Circle of the United Methodist Women and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a graduate of Farmville State Teachers College (Longwood). She was a native of Nansemond County, Va. She was a retired school teacher of the Norfolk County, Chesapeake and Gates County, N.C., public school systems and was also a former teacher for Miss Porter's School, Hampton.

Survivors include her sons, John Carroll Ellis Jr., and his wife, Janet A. Ellis, of Virginia Beach; a sister, Myra P. Dodd of Suffolk; a granddaughter, Mary Virginia Ellis of Virginia Beach; three nephews, Robert T. Pittman of St. Petersburg, Fla., Thomas E. Pittman Jr. of Appomatox, Va., Vance P. Pittman Jr. of Portsmouth; and extended family member, Florence C. Bishop of Richmond.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mark United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Douglas L. Gestwick. Burial will be in Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 5833 Hawthorne Lane, Portsmouth, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. The family suggests memorial contributions to the building fund of St. Mark United Methodist Church, 4320 Twin Pines Road, Portsmouth, Va. 23703.
