Andre H. Swan, 21, was arrested Monday and charged with malicious wounding and throwing missiles at an occupied vehicle in connection with a recent incident of rock throwing that injured a driver on U.S. Route 17.
Swan, who lives in the 5600 block of Nathaniel St. in the Belleville Meadows section of northern Suffolk, was picked up at his home by Detective D. J. Greene and taken to police headquarters where he was arrested on the felony charges.
He was then taken to Western Tidewater Regional Jail, where he was being held in lieu of $10,000 bond Monday evening.
Swan, a Nansemond River High School graduate, is a maintenance worker at QVC, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
Police also have petitions on file for the arrest of a 15-year-old, who also lives in Belleville Meadows, on the same charges.
Swan's arrest came as the result of information from a Crime Line caller, Simpkins said.
On April 3, a large rock crashed through the windshield of a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Evan Spivey, 17, on Route 17 beneath the Western Freeway overpass, police said. The vehicle crashed into a guard rail on the opposite side of the road, injuring Spivey, who underwent facial surgery that night, police said.
At least two other vehicles were hit by rocks at the same spot just minutes before Spivey's Tahoe was hit, and a vehicle was hit at the same location April 5. Charges have not been placed in connection with those incidents. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
