PILOT HONORS 14 FOR OUTSTANDING WORK

Marc Davis, Earl Swift and Tom Robinson were named winners of the 37th annual Slover Awards, The Virginian-Pilot's top honors for excellence in reporting and writing. Vicki Cronis won the award in photography, and Courtney Murphy won in copy editing/layout.

Sam Hundley was presented with the Landmark Graphics and Illustrators Award.

A total of 14 staffers were honored for outstanding work.

The Slover Awards are named for the late Samuel L. Slover, former chairman of the board of the newspaper. The 37th annual ceremonies, held in the newsroom, recognized day-to-day excellence in news reporting, feature writing, sports writing, photography and copy editing. The contest is open to full- and part-time employees.

Slover was the uncle of Frank Batten Sr., chairman of the board of Landmark Communications Inc., which owns The Virginian-Pilot.

The Landmark Graphics and Illustrators Award recognized the best artwork from Landmark's metro newspapers in Roanoke and Hampton Roads in Virginia and in Greensboro, N.C.

The runner-up in the graphics contest was John Earle, a graphics artist with The Pilot.

The photography runner-up was Bill Tiernan.

The runner-up in copy editing/layout was Latane Jones.

Frank Vehorn was selected as the runner-up in sports.

Mac Daniel, who covers city government in Chesapeake, and Debra Gordon, who writes on medical issues, tied for second place in feature writing.

In news writing, Dale Eisman, The Pilot's reporter in Washington, was second, and Marie Joyce, who covers medical issues, was third.

Bruce Bradley, publisher of The Pilot, presented checks for $1,000 to first-place winners, $500 to first runners-up and $250 to third-place winners. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
