Mary Joan DeChant Franklin died at her home Sunday, April 13, 1997.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. Franklin had lived in the Norfolk area for more than 30 years. She taught Religion and English at Norfolk Catholic and Portsmouth Catholic High Schools and was a substitute teacher in the Norfolk public schools. A graduate of Marquette University, Mrs. Franklin also held various journalism positions and was involved in management of funding for the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of Christ the King Parish and is survived by her husband, Mervin Alexander Franklin; her daughter, Patricia Ann Franklin of Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Paul Edward Franklin of Norfolk, Terence Francis Franklin of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bruce Alexander Franklin of Dameron, Md.; two brothers, Donald F. DeChant of Boca Raton, Fla. and Gerald V. DeChant of Milwaukee; a sister, Ann C. Allen of Tampa, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.
A wake will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church on Thursday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
