I was appalled that the school board voted 4 to 2 against the $3 million needed for a new gym for Granby High School. How dare Conrad Greif say we're taking money out of the education of our children. Sports and physical education are very important parts of our children's education and I hope the City Council will take on as a contest despite James Herndon's so-called ``good conscience.''

Where is the lottery money for schools? Or in who's pocket? The Alumni Association has had several meetings with key persons involved in the proposed project. We find it appalling that there wasn't a second to Joseph Waldo's motion to approve the funds discussion.

The Alumni Association has done everything in its power to resolve this issue that has existed several months, and now in the 11th hour the Norfolk City School Board is not in full support.

Association Support library funding

I am writing to urge residents of Norfolk and city officials to support 1 percent funding of the Norfolk libraries. Anyone who has used the Norfolk libraries in recent years has noticed that the facilities and services are in dire need of updating. A visit to libraries in other cities is all it takes to see how far behind Norfolk city libraries lag.

The residents of Norfolk may enjoy an upscale mall or a new sports arena, but they need a well-equipped library system as much as they need good schools.
