SUFFOLK STUDENT IS AMONG 32 EUREKA CLUB DEBUTANTSTHIS IS NOT YOUR USUAL SOCIAL GROUP, THE YOUNG WOMEN HAVE ALSO DONE COMMUNITY SERVICE.

A Suffolk student is among 32 seniors from area high schools who will be presented to society at the 45th annual Debutante Cotillion of the Eureka Club Inc.

Shameka Cheeks of Nansemond River High School, the daughter of Doris Cheeks will be presented at the event at 9 p.m. Friday at The Showcase, 2850 Airline Blvd. Admission is by invitation only.

Along with rehearsals since February, events leading up to the cotillion have included a debutantes-elect and escorts social at the American Legion Post 190; viewing ``Bubbling Brown Sugar'' at Norfolk State University's L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center; a sleep-over at the Holiday Inn-Greenbrier; and for community service, a visit to the Douglass Park Elementary School, where the debutantes read to and tutored students, as well as a visit to the Brent-Lox Nursing Home, where they sang and presented gifts to the residents.

A luncheon and talent show also was held at the Holiday Inn-Greenbrier, followed by worship at the Third Baptist Church on April 20.

Warren S. Harris is the cotillion chairperson, and Inez L. Howard of Norfolk State University is the choreographer.

Charles B. Whitehurst Sr. is the club president.
