KATURA R. CAREY-HARVEY

Katura R. Carey-Harvey, 49, of the 4900 block of Gosnold Ave., died April 17, 1997, in DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk.

Executive director of Cooperating Hampton Roads Organizations for Minorities in Engineering, (C.H.R.O.M.E.), she was a Portsmouth native and a member of Messiah Presbyterian Church, Norfolk.

Her church activities and involvement included: Messiah Sunday school teacher and a member of the nominating committee and general counsel of the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia. She was a member of the choir, the Christian education committee and was president of Vision 96 nominating committee.

Other memberships included: Former executive director, Portsmouth Area Resources Coalition (PARC); member, Zeta Pi Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.; National Association of Pre College Directors; Chesapeake Bay Foundation Science Advisory Board; New Horizons Governor's School Advisory Board; American Association of University Women; and chairperson, Education Committee of Leadership Hampton Roads.

Special honors included: Recipient, Urban League of Hampton Roads' Vivian C. Mason Meritorious Service Award; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Zeta Pi Zeta chapter's Honoring Finer Womanhood; and the Tidewater Section of the National Council for Negro Women's Award for Meritorious Accomplishments.

Survivors include her husband, Larry McCoy Harvey; daughter, Petra Keturah Harvey of Norfolk; two sons, Larry McCoy Harvey Jr. and Titus McCoy Harvey, both of Norfolk; parents, Beulah Stowe Carey and Richard Carey Jr., both of Portsmouth; sister, Lottie Carey Short of Portsmouth; two brothers, Richard Carey III of Portsmouth and Reginald Carey of Chesapeake; mother-in-law, Lucille Branch of Murfreesboro, N.C.; five sisters-in-law, Elsie Gardenia Harvey, Gladys Branch, Rachel Branch, Val Carey and Marion Carey; three brothers-in-law, Hal Short, Gerald Branch and Carlton Branch; a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, in-laws, and several devoted friends; and a special friend, Margretta Reid Fairweather.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. T. David Parham and the Rev. Curtis E. Edmonds Sr. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Viewing will begin at Corprew Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Monday and at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children of Katura Harvey Scholarship Fund, c/o Messiah Presbyterian Church, 1485 Johnston Road, Norfolk. Va. 23513. The family will receive friends after the interment at Messiah Presbyterian Church. Family and friends will assemble at 4901 Gosnold Ave., Norfolk, for the procession to the church.
