Mildred Stitt Clarkson, 95, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, died April 18, 1997, in her residence.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Mrs. Clarkson was the daughter of the Rev. John Wesley Stitt and Martha Hewitt Stitt. She was the widow of John Palmer Clarkson of River Forest, Ill., whom she married Oct. 3, 1925. She was the mother of Norfolk Circuit Court Judge John Edward Clarkson.
Mrs. Clarkson was a graduate of Elmira College, Elmira, N.Y., and did graduate work in psychiatry at the University of Chicago and the Washington School of Psychiatry. She was Director of the Metropolitan Service Department of the YWCA in Chicago from 1937-1942.
She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1942 to become Director of Employee Relations of the Finance Division of the War Department. In 1947, she became Director of Personnel Relations of the U.S. Public Health Service, a position she held until her retirement in 1965. She was the recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Award from the War Department in 1945 and the Superior Civilian Award from the United States Public Health Service in 1960.
Besides her son, Judge Clarkson, Mrs. Clarkson is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kirkland Tucker Clarkson of Norfolk; two grandchildren, John Palmer Clarkson and Mary Clarkson Stein; and four great-grandchildren, Joan Blakely Stein, Martin Edward Stein, John Palmer Clarkson and Kirkland Tucker Clarkson all of Jacksonville, Fla.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Westminster Canterbury by the Rev. Allen Johnson. Burial will be at Arlington Cemetery, Elmhurst, Ill. Memorials may be sent to The Chrysler Museum of Art, 245 West Olney Road, Norfolk, Va. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
