ANN L. HEREFORD

Ann Lane Hereford, 68, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, in a local hospital.

She was born Oct. 26, 1928, in Petersburg, Va., the daughter of the late William F. Lane and Sarah Elizabeth Seward Lane. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marguerite A. Hereford. Mrs. Hereford graduated from Mount Vernon Seminary, Washington, D.C., attended Sweetbriar College and received her degree in education from the University of Virginia.

Mrs. Hereford was the loving wife of Dr. Frank E. Hereford Jr. for 49 years, during his tenure as the president of the University of Virginia from 1974 to 1985. She will be remembered as a most gracious First Lady of U.Va. Ann was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Ivy, a former board member with Planned Parenthood, a former member of the Junior League and former member of Rivanna Garden Club and former member of the Contemporary Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children, Frank L. Hereford and his wife, Beverly, of Charlottesville, Sarah Hereford Rick and her husband, John R. of Atlanta and Robert Mason Hereford of Charlottesville; sister, Sally Lane Johnson and her husband, Walter M. of Washington, D.C.; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, 1997, in the University of Virginia Cemetery with the Rev. George Wyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her name to the Vice President of Development, University of Virginia, The Rotunda N.E. Wing, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.
