Rufus Hayes ``Bay Smith'' Smith, 69, of the 800 block of Seminole Drive, died April 18, 1997, in Obici Hospital.
Mr. Smith, a native of Nansemond County, was a retired self-employed contractor who was in business for numerous years. He was a member of First Baptist Church Mahan Street and its Male Usher Board.
Survivors include his wife, Louella Smith; four daughters, Consandra Bell and Brenda Almond, both of Norfolk, Juanita Smith and Deneen Croker, both of Suffolk; three sons, Rufus Smith Jr. and James Smith, both of Suffolk, and Blake Jones of Norfolk; a sister, Barbara Wilson of Norfolk; two brothers, Arthur L. Smith and Herbert L. Smith of Suffolk; five sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee, Robbie Crocker, Mable Haywood, Thelma Smith and Doris Smith; two aunts, Rosella Cook of Philadelphia and Coralie Parks of St. Louis, Mo.; an uncle, Alec Francis of New York City; a brother-in-law, Clyde Bradley; and eight grandchildren. He was the son of the late Virginia F. Smith and Joe Smith.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church Mahan Street by the Rev. Issac Williams. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. today.
