Julian Andrews ``Andy'' White, M.D., 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep April 19, 1997.

He was a well known Virginia Beach physician. Dr. White was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and attended Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, N.C. He graduated from Wake Forest Medical School and then graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1941.

His internship was at Norfolk General Hospital and this was followed by 13 years in the Navy. He served for two years in the Pacific during World War II and then 11 years as a Navy flight surgeon aboard numerous aircraft carriers. In 1954 he left the Navy as a full commander and entered the private practice of medicine in Virginia Beach, where he practiced for 35 years in the Mayflower Apartment Building. He was a former president of the Princess Anne Medical Society, former vice president of the State Medical Society of Virginia, served as president of the American Cancer Society, Virginia Beach Chapter, and was one of the first medical advisers and trustees of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was also a former president of the staff and retired staff member of Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was a member of the Virginia Beach Medical Society, Virginia State Medical Society, American Medical Association, life member of the Southern Medical Association, Civil Aviation Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association, Flying Physicians Association and was a medical examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration for 43 years.

For eight years during the summers in the 1930s in Virginia Beach, Andy was a lifeguard at the oceanfront. He was a truly accomplished pilot, with over 5,000 flying hours to his credit. He used to tell stories of having worked at Overman's Drug Store in Elizabeth City making sodas and delivering ice cream to nearby hotels. He also spoke of working odd jobs during his medical school years during the Depression that were remarkable. He will be missed by those who truly knew him.

Survivors include two brothers, Joseph J. White of Elizabeth City and Sidney White of Homestead, Fla.; and a sister, Margaret Midgette of Elizabeth City. He has a son, J.A. White Jr. of Virginia Beach, and a daughter, Mary Robin Waters of Wilmington, N.C., and a longtime friend and significant other.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, by the Rev. Calvin G. Gardner.
