John B. Dey Elementary School in Virginia Beach won a first place in its division during the state Odyssey of the Mind tournament Saturday.
South Hampton Roads schools picked up four other awards in the contest of teamwork and problem-solving, said Bill Wagner, the event's co-director for the Tidewater region.
Fourteen local teams were among about 170 that competed from 13 regions around the state at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The John B. Dey team, which won in the contest's ``OMerdroid'' category, will go on to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind world finals at the University of Maryland in June, said Wagner, a middle school science teacher at Cape Henry Collegiate in Virginia Beach.
Other local winners were:
Cape Henry Collegiate - second place in the high school division for ``Classics - Can You Dig It?'' and third place in the middle school division for ``Double Trouble.''
Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach - second place in the high school division for ``OMerdroid.''
Norfolk Academy - the Outstanding OMer award.
Officials said they were happy with the region's performance.
``We feel good about it,'' Wagner said. ``We had a strong showing.''
