You'd have to look far and wide to find someone locally who's done more to promote women's involvement in golf than Honey Bee pro Bridget Pendergast. And she's far from finished.
One of the founders of the Career Women's Golf Association, Pendergast and Honey Bee have plans for the second annual ``women's day in golf,'' set for May 17 at the Virginia Beach course.
In addition to the usual clinics, fashion show, continental breakfast, lunch and cocktail hour that characterized ``Day'' one, this year Pendergast and the Career Women's Golf Association are sponsoring a charity tournament. There'll be a shotgun start at 8 a.m., with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. The $60 entry fee includes breakfast, lunch and prizes.
For $35, you can sign up for clinics on the short game, full swing, club-fitting and golf-ball design. Presiding over those will be Pat Lange, president and owner of Lange Golf Club, a course in her home state of Arizona that she tailored for women's play.
Interested parties need to register. To do so, call Megan Hackett at Honey Bee at 471-2768. Cutoff date for registration is Monday, May 12.
This and that
The last time we looked, Williamsburg's Mark Carnevale had earned more than $100,000 in just four NIKE Tour events. That smashed the circuit's previous record for $100,000. It took Joe Durant 11 tournaments to cross six figures just last season. . . . And, in case you missed it, following the Louisiana Open earlier this month, the man trailing Carnevale on the NIKE money list was ex-ODU star Joe Daley, who won the Louisiana event. Richmond's Bobby Wadkins was fifth overall, second to Daly at Louisiana. . . . Just wondering: ex-Ford's Colony travelling pro Fuzzy Zoeller was one of five former Masters champions who recently signed 100 sets of commemorative player cards. Nick Faldo, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw and Craig Stadler also agreed to sign, forming a five-card set that would be sold for $70. Proceeds are to go to 1946 Masters champ Herman Keiser. Does the value of those sets increase or decrease in view of Zoeller's recent Tiger comments?. . . . Ocean View in Norfolk will be the site for this year's Walter W. Wood golf tournament, proceeds from which go to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. The tournament is May 8, format is four-man Florida best-ball. There's a $50 entry fee that includes greens fees, cart, post-tourney cookout. Call Linda Hussey at Ocean View, 480-2094, to register. . . . The William Fuller Chesapeake Care All-Star weekend is June 8-9 this year. Reservations for sponsorships and spots in the golf tournament are available by calling Jim Dunlo at 382-8389 or 547-5076.
