Thomas Daniel Holland, 37, beloved son, father, husband and brother, died unexpectedly in his home Monday, April 28, 1997.
He was born July 28, 1959, at DePaul Medical Center, the son of Mary Louise of Norfolk and the late Aubrey Lee Holland. He grew up in Larrymore Lawns, Norfolk, and graduated from Lake Taylor High School in 1978. He loved military aircraft, but his dream of flying them was cut short by a motorcycle accident which disqualified him from military service. He went into landscaping and tree surgery, and later moved to Pensacola, Fla., where he lived for a number of years. He worked for the City of Portsmouth Parks/Services Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his loving wife, Kathleen E. Holland; a son, Shawn C. Holland of Pensacola; two stepdaughters, Nicole Merkh and Danielle Merkh, both of Norfolk; three sisters, Ina C. Hummel and Carolyn L. Griffin, both of Windsor, Va., Margaret A. Holland of Yorktown; two brothers, Frederick V. Holland of Nashville, Tenn., and Kenneth E. Holland of Virginia Beach.
A good friend and neighbor, he was always ready to lend a helping hand. Loved by family and friends, he will be greatly missed.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Kempsville Road, Norfolk, by Dr. Robert Reccord. The family will greet visitors at the church from 11 a.m. until the service time. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held at the church following the interment. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Norfolk in memory of Thomas D.
