Louie Elford Askew, 80, died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at his home after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 14, 1916 and a native of Harris County, Ga., he had lived in Portsmouth since 1940. He was an agent for the State Farm Insurance Companies for 50 years, having retired in September of 1995. This was not only a career for Louie, but a lifetime of service and dedication to his policyholders. He was a past president of the Life Underwriters Association and a member and former deacon of the Churchland Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alene L. Askew; two sons, L. Rudolph Askew and his wife, Patricia of Great Falls, Va., Allen D. Risner of Benton, Ark.; two daughters, L. Darlene Shoemake and husband, Jon, of San Antonio, Texas, Teresa Askew of Richmond. He leaves seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Also surviving are four sisters, Mozelle Hildreth, Louise Harveston, Rachel Smith and Ila June Grubbs, along with a brother, John H. Askew.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Churchland Baptist Church by Dr. Clint Hopkins with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
