A retired attorney and veteran of World War II, Vaughan Sharp Winborne Sr. died April 28, 1997, at the VA Hospital, Durham, after several strokes and an extended illness.
The third of seven children of Stanley Winborne and Frances Sharp Winborne, he was born in the family home in Murfreesboro Sept. 25, 1917. His father was an attorney, landowner, mayor of Murfreesboro and a state representative. Gov. O. Max Gardner appointed Stanley Winborne to the State Utilities Commission in 1930, where he rose to chairman, retiring from that post in 1958.
Vaughan Winborne Sr. earned undergraduate and law degrees at UNC-Chapel Hill in six years, passing the bar in 1941. He was an accomplished athlete, lettering in track at UNC. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard Reserve. He captained several vessels in the South Pacific Theater during the war, achieving the rank of lieutenant.
A tenacious advocate, he fought as hard as ethically possible for each of his clients. He was so friendly and well-known that it often took him a half-hour to walk the one block from his office to the courthouse.
One who enjoyed community service and social occasions, Mr. Winborne was an active Democrat, American Legionnaire, Jaycee and Lion's Club member. He also enjoyed the Terpsichorean Club, Carolina Country Club, the Sons of the American Revolution and the Milburnie Fishing Club.
In 1955, Mr. Winborne wed Anne Badger Smith of Raleigh, the daughter of Judge Paul Faison Smith and Delia Bryan Duncan. Both families were friends and had known each other since before the Winbornes had moved to Raleigh. The couple reared two sons, both of whom are practicing attorneys in Raleigh.
Mr. Winborne suffered his first stroke in 1980, retired in 1982 and spent some three-fourths of his time at his Emerald Isle beach home.
