BOYS TENNIS TOURNEYS, TCIS COMPETITION WILL BEGIN THIS WEEK

Conference boys tennis tournaments begin this week in the Beach, Eastern and Southeastern districts.

Singles finalists will advance to the Eastern Regional at Owls Creek in Virginia Beach, as will both doubles teams in the title match. The top two teams in each district also qualify for the regional team dual competition, which begins next week. Individual competition follows the week of May 18.

The Eastern District tournament begins Tuesday at Old Dominion University.

The Southeastern District tournament starts Wednesday at Mast Tennis Complex in Suffolk.

The Beach District tournament begins today at Owls Creek.

The TCIS boys and girls championships begin Thursday at various sites.

A capsule look at the tournaments:

Beach District

Schedule: First two rounds of A bracket begin at 1 p.m. today at Owls Creek. First round of B bracket and the first round of doubles begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Owls Creek. Third round of A and B brackets and second and third rounds of doubles begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at First Colonial High or Virginia Beach Racquet Club. Semifinals are at Owls Creek at 1 p.m. Thursday. The A and B championship matches and consolation matches are at 10 a.m. Friday at Owls Creek; doubles championships and consolation at approximately 2 p.m.

1996 singles champion: Ryan Davidson, Cox.

1996 doubles champions: Ryan Davidson and Nathan Shanks, Cox.

Top singles seeds: Allen Zirkle (Bayside), Josh Barnes (Kempsville), Brett Carter (Princess Anne).

Top doubles teams: Zirkle-Jim Pepiot (Bayside); Paul Hamilton-Steve Lin (Kempsville); Joe Neeley-Ryan Bautista (Tallwood).

Eastern District

Schedule: Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. All matches at ODU.

1996 singles champion: Rob Brown, Maury.

1996 doubles champion: Rob Brown and Ross Hoffman, Maury.

Top singles players: Rob Brown (Maury), Ross Hoffman (Maury) and Mauro Almeida (Granby).

Top doubles teams: Brown-Hoffman (Maury), Almeida-Matt Hartnett (Granby).

Southeastern District

Schedule: Matches begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday; semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Thursday; singles final and consolation at 3:30 p.m. Friday, with doubles at 5:30 p.m. All competition will be the Mast complex in Suffolk.

1996 singles champion: David Bristow, Great Bridge.

1996 doubles champion: David Bristow and Mike Montolvo, Great Bridge.

Top singles players: David Bristow (Great Bridge), Chris Adkins (Great Bridge); Chris Upton (Nansemond River); Josh Asble (Deep Creek).

Top doubles teams: Bristow-Chip Howard (Great Bridge), Asble-Ryan Gettier (Deep Creek).

TCIS boys and girls

Tournament format: Six singles and three doubles brackets, set up like a dual meet with each team placing one entry in each - No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles, No. 2 singles, etc. Teams earn points for each individual victory.

Boys schedule: 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Norfolk Collegiate and Northside Park; finals begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Northside Park.

Girls schedule: 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Norfolk Academy and Virginia Wesleyan. Finals begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Norfolk Collegiate.

Players to watch: Mike Duquette (Norfolk Academy), Craig Rice (N-SA) and Michelle Grover (Norfolk Academy) are all nationally ranked.
