JONETHEN D. BELDING

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Jonethen Dean ``J.D.'' Belding, 82, of 410 Dominion Road, died suddenly Sunday evening, May 4, 1997.

Born July 5, 1914, in Plankinton, S.D., he was the youngest of six children. He enlisted in the Marine Corps at 16 and was a China Marine. After serving for eight years, he returned home and in 1940 married Elaine Weller who was to be his wife for 57 years.

J.D. retired from the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot at St. Juliens Creek as a chief quarterman ordnance. He owned and operated the Fourth Street Gun Shop for seven years and was well known in competitive shooting circles. A founding member and past president of the Norfolk County Rifle Club, he was also a lifetime master marksman and member of the NRA. He was a longtime member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.

He will be loved and remembered always by his wife, Elaine; daughter, Karen Belding of Hampton; son, Jon Belding and his wife, Yvonne; daughter, Susan Saunders and her husband, Karl; granddaughter, Laurie Belding, and grandson, Todd Belding, all of Portsmouth; and legions of friends.

The family will receive friends at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 5615 Portsmouth Blvd., at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 8. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery immediately after the service.
