GEORGE HUMPHREY

Retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class George Humphrey, 59, left us to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ May 4, 1997, in his home.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he was a Norfolk resident for 27 years. He retired from the Navy after 26 years of service and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He attended Living Sacrifice Ministries Church, Norfolk.

Cherishing his memory are his wife, Mamie Helen Humphrey; two sons, Marvin L. Humphrey of Norfolk and David M. Humphrey of Ansbach, Germany; three daughters, Alice D. Humphrey and Celestine J. Nichols of Virginia Beach and Laura Darlene Hill of Yorktown; two sons-in-law, Bradford Hill and David C. Nichols Sr.; three daughters-in-law, Joyce, Amelia and Nadine Humphrey; six sisters, Laura Brown of Annapolis, Md., Yula Humphrey of Augusta, Ga., Katy Watson and Dorothy Humphrey of Long Island, N.Y., Pauline Saunders and Marian McCornmick of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, Ernest Sr. and Mary Frances Humphrey; two sons, Jeffrey George Humphrey and Edward Christopher Humphrey; three brothers, Ernest Jr., Claude and Roger Humphrey; sister, Mary Morris; and a grandson, Edward Upshur.

A viewing will be held Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Home, Norfolk, and a wake service will be held Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Home.
