Deputy may have

met alleged victim

via dating service

A veteran Chesapeake sheriff's deputy who resigned Monday after being charged with abduction and aggravated sexual battery apparently met his alleged victim through a dating service.

Stephen L. Daniel, 36, apparently talked with a 25-year-old woman by telephone and then met her in a Norfolk restaurant Friday night, according to Dave Hughes, a Chesapeake police spokesman.

Later, Hughes said, a witness reported seeing Daniel with the woman at the Red Roof Inn in the 700 block of Woodlake Drive. According to a police report, the witness said Daniel was forcing the woman, handcuffed, up a flight of outside stairs, Hughes said.

The witness called police, who found the two. The woman said she was there against her will, Hughes said. Daniel was arrested.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Police release identity

of body found near mall

Police released the name of a man who was found dead Monday night behind the Great American Outlet Mall, but the cause of death was undetermined Tuesday.

The man was identified as William H. Payne II, 40, of the 3500 block of Barry Street. He was found about 7:30 p.m. by a passerby, who told a security officer, who then called police.

Police said there were no apparent wounds or signs of trauma to Payne's body. Police treated the death as suspicious and sent the body to the crime lab for an autopsy.

Autopsy results were inconclusive Tuesday, and police were awaiting toxicology tests.
