CENTRAL ALLEN DITCHES JUDGE WHO YANKED NORTH'S WEAPONS PERMIT

RICHMOND - Gov. George F. Allen on Wednesday replaced the judge who was ousted by the General Assembly after revoking Oliver North's concealed weapons permit. Clarke County Circuit Judge James L. Berry's reappointment was blocked earlier this year by a GOP state senator representing Berry's district.

In 1992, Berry issued North a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Two years later, when North was the Republican U.S. Senate nominee, Berry refused to renew the permit, citing North's role in the Iran-Contra scandal during the mid-1980s.

The assembly did not agree on Berry's successor, tossing the choice to Allen. He picked John Reed Prosser to fill the vacancy in the 26th Judicial Circuit. LESBIAN MOM WANTS CHILD, FRIEND TO BE ABLE TO VISIT

RICHMOND - Nine months after ending a high-profile fight for custody of her son, lesbian mother Sharon Bottoms returned to court Wednesday to seek visitation rights for her live-in companion.

A lawyer for Bottoms asked the Virginia Court of Appeals to overturn a judge's order barring any contact between April Wade and 5-year-old Tyler Doustou. A decision is expected in a few weeks.

Henrico County Circuit Court Judge Buford Parsons barred Wade from seeing or talking on the telephone with Tyler when he revised Bottoms' visitation last August, after the mother dropped her custody fight.

A visitation order allows Bottoms to see Tyler every other weekend. Parsons ruled that Bottoms was an unfit mother because she and Wade engaged in oral sex, a felony in Virginia. WHO NEEDS MILK MONEY? SCHOOL GOES HIGH-TECH

STANARDSVILLE - The days of milk money are coming to an end in Greene County.

Instead of handing over $1 bills and assorted coins for a fish sandwich, peaches and tater tots, students at William Monroe Middle School have started using a new computerized lunch system.

By punching in an account code, the computer enables sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at the Stanardsville school to pay for lunch by credit in addition to cash.

All students need to do to buy lunch is punch in a six- to nine-digit code assigned them by the school, said Carol Haas, director of food services for the Greene County schools. PORN CHARGE DROPPED AGAINST EX-FUMA TEACHER

PALMYRA - A child pornography charge against a former Fork Union Military Academy teacher was dismissed Wednesday after prosecutors said evidence seized from the suspect didn't support the accusation.

However, Gregory Allen Moyer, 42, still faces trial July 31 on 18 other charges of taking indecent liberties with children he supervised. The alleged offenses occurred over two years starting in February 1994 and involved two cadets, authorities said.

Moyer, who taught science at the private, all-male boarding school, is free on $20,000 bond posted by the family of one of the alleged victims. He faces up to 90 years in prison if convicted. COMING UP TODAY
