ROBERT E. SHIFLET

Dr. Robert Edwin Shiflet, 77, a Norfolk native, died May 7, 1997, in a hospital in Augusta, Ga., after a long illness.

Dr. Shiflet, a 1936 Maury High School graduate, received his medical degree from the University of Georgia School of Medicine and later his degree in urology at Orange Memorial Hospital, Orlando, Fla. He practiced medicine in Toccoa and Athens, Ga., until 1975, at which time he retired, due to ill health. Dr. Shiflet was a Navy veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart.

Dr. Shiflet was a Baptist and was a former member of Central Baptist Church of Norfolk.

He was the son of Harvey H. and Lucile K. Shiflet, both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Crisp Shiflet of Athens; four daughters, Helen Elaine Gowdy of Cary, N.C., Orville Yvonne Simpson and Jeannie Marie Corithers of Athens and Katherine Lucile Kinnear of Greensboro, N.C.; brother, Delmar M. Shiflet of Norfolk; and two sisters, Mildred L. Shiflet and Mary Shiflet Lewis of Virginia Beach. Surviving him also are 10 grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

The funeral arrangements are being handled by Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, Athens, where a funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. Family visitation will take place Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
