Catherine M. Thela, 81, of the 900 block of Sunnyside Drive, died May 8, 1997, in a Norfolk hospital.
Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., she was the widow of Arthur L. Thela and a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church and its Over 50 Club. She was a member of Kempsville Senior Citizens Club, Women's Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post (NU)4809, past president of Women's Auxiliary of V.F.W. in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and past president of Women's Republican Club, Mount Vernon.
Survivors include a daughter, Lana B. Chapman of Virginia Beach; a son, Kenneth J. Thela of Callam Bay, Wash.; two sisters, Eleanor D'Andrea of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Dorothy Vogt of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; a brother, Albert Jones of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Paul Chapman of Chesapeake, Alyson Donoghue of Ellicott City, Md., and U.S. Army Capt. Matt A. Chapman; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m Monday in St. Matthews Catholic Church by Fr. Timothy Drake. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthews Catholic Church Building Fund.
