Walter Edward Davenport Sr., 71, of the 300 block of Saunders Drive, died May 8, 1997, in a Portsmouth hospital.
A native of Tyrrell County, N.C., he was a meat cutter for Colley Provision, a member of Sweethaven Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Joyce Edelstein and Esther Marie Griffin, both of Chesapeake, and Lisa Darlene Carroll of Clearwater, Fla.; two sons, Walter E. Davenport Jr. and Gary Stephen Davenport, both of Portsmouth; a brother, Alfred V. Davenport of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, Dennis Christopher Whatley, Todd Brandon Edelstein, Amy O'Neil Griffin, Wayne Alan Griffin II, Tiffany Nicole Davenport and Gary Stephen Davenport II.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Lew Hunter, the Rev. Damon Wyatt and the Rev. Charles Peterson. Burial with military honors will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
