Lynne Harris isn't saying she's wealthy, but she does admit to having a $500 check just lying around the house.
``I haven't cashed it yet,'' Harris said of her championship winnings from the Virginia Ladies All-Star Duckpin Tour stop at the Plaza Bowl in Richmond. ``I'm still in shock.''
The Richmond title was Harris' first since 1987, when the 34-year-old Virginia Beach resident joined the monthly circuit that runs from September through May at lanes throughout the state.
Harris said she covets the 1-inch star signifying an all-star tour title she received for her green-and-blue bowling shirt almost as much as the $500 first-place check. Almost.
The next ladies all-star tour stop will be on May 17 at Portsmouth's Victory Lanes.
BOWLERS OF THE WEEK: How about those duckpin Driskells? Virginia Driskell bowled a 411 series at Bowlarama last week, a performance bettered only by her daughter, Robin, who checked in with a 443. Robin's sister, Amy, was fifth-best at 400. And her brother, David, was No. 5 among men with a 437. Alan Angevine (Tidewater Pro) led all bowlers with a 456 series.
A third Driskell daughter, Sharon Thoms, cracked the top 10 two weeks ago.
TENPIN TOPICS: A few held-over results from Pinboys of Lynnhaven: John Babcock in the Earlybirds league and Ken Rinehart (Masters) rolled perfect games. High series among men went to George Ensor of the Tuesday Rejects at 813. Brett Williams (Masters) had a 770 series and Buck Fernandez (Earlybirds) logged a 732. Nancy Stalcup was tops among women with a 686 series. In the Tidewater Team Challenge May 4, Brandon Lowe, age 13, had a 704 series and 277 game while John Glasgow, 15, notched a 706 series.
Glasgow was coming off his second 300 game on April 26 in the Thunderbolts league at the Franklin Bowling Center. James Crawford came close to the magic number, firing a 297 game in the Thursday Night's Men's League on May 1. On May 3, Jennifer McDonough, 13, bowled a 609 series. She averages a 149. And George Best, 17, also had a 609 series with a high game of 244. He averages 161. And look for the new laser light show during the Franklin Center's Rock `n' Bowl sessions on Saturday nights at 9 p.m. Bowlers perform in the dark to the music of a DJ during Rock 'n' Bowl.
At Pinboys in Chesapeake, James Williams Sr. had a 253 game in the Primetime Winter seniors league. Frank Gordon logged the high series with a 637. Myles Callis (Twilighters) had a 299 game.
