Norfolk Christian's Murden breaks Chowan records

Jennifer Murden is the Chowan College softball team's Ironwoman.

Murden, a Norfolk Christian graduate, has become a standard bearer at shortstop, starting all but one of her 1,010 consecutive innings at that position. She pitched in the other.

Murden, who helped the Lady Braves to a 125-30 record in four years, notched career records in fielding percentage (.985), assists (472) and had four straight seasons of 100 or more assists.

The six-time Dean's List student also made her presence at the plate known with a .300 career average. Sailing team goes for its OLD DOMINION 10th, 11th national titles

Women's lacrosse standout Carly Brown was named to the Regional All-American second team. . . . The Monarchs will look to capture their tenth and eleventh national regatta championships when they compete at the ICYRA/Sperry Top-Sider National Women's Championships and the ICYRA/Ronstan Team Race National Championship at the end of this month. Four lacrosse players on VA. WESLEYAN All-ODAC second team

Virginia Wesleyan lacrosse players Tom Lewis, Tyler Anderson and Scott Chandler were named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference second team. Lewis, a junior midfielder and two-time All-ODAC selection, broke the school record for career points in a season with 151.

Anderson, a junior defenseman, is also a two-time pick. Chandler, a sophomore attackman, led the Marlins with 37 goals this season. ALUMNI UPDATE Churchland's Cross leaves her mark at Averett College

Averett College three-sport athlete Amy Cross (Churchland) helped the women's basketball, tennis and cross country teams to several firsts during her tenure.

Cross, who graduated May 3 first in her class, was a member of the first tennis team to win a championship in school history. Later, she led Averett to three more Dixie Conference crowns. She was also the first woman in school history to place first in a cross country meet when Averett met Bennett College in 1995.

She was a first team all-conference selection as she helped her squad win its first league title. In basketball, Cross scored 15 points and had six assists as Averett broke a 135-game losing streak for its first conference victory. She was also the first woman selected to receive the Don Scalf Award as the top female scholar athlete in the Dixie Conference. . . . Five local athletes were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement at Radford University. Those earning honors, all of whom carry a cumulative grade point average above 3.0 were: Wendy Davis (gymnastics, Bayside), Mandie Moore (field hockey, Indian River), Holly Patterson (soccer/tennis, Western Branch), Rian Everett (basketball, Tallwood) and Ryan McFadden (baseball, Granby). . . . James Madison junior Bryan Jackson (Norfolk Collegiate) tied for eighth place with a 154 in the Scotty Duncan Memorial District II Golf Championship. . . . Longwood junior Karla Roberson (Chesapeake) will compete in the NCAA Division II and III women's golf championship May 14-17. Roberson, a two-time All-American who finished with a 82.3 stroke average, keeps alive a 14-year string of NCAA tournament appearances for the Lancers. . . . Dawn Bell (Bayside) was named MVP of the Louisburg College softball team. . . . Lehigh junior lacrosse standout Jared Harrison (Norfolk Academy) was named to the second team All-Patriot League defensive team.
