L. Eldon James died Saturday morning, May 10, 1997.
Born Jan. 1, 1913, in Dendron, Surry County, he served in the Navy during World War II. He moved to Hampton in 1950. In 1965 and 1966 he served as national commander of the American Legion. Mr. James was appointed by Gov. Mills Godwin as a member of the Virginia Commission on Veterans Affairs. He received his BS degree from The College of William and Mary in 1934 and law degree from George Washington University in 1937. In 1989 Mr. James was awarded the Society of Alumni Medallion, bestowed for distinguished service and loyalty to the college.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Aurelia Quinby Mitchell James; daughters, Nancy Buhl of Richmond, Quinby Amory of Hampton and Sally Andrews of Hampton; a son, L. Eldon James Jr. of King George County; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Hampton Baptist Church by Dr. Chester Brown. Burial, with American Legion rites, will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Hampton.
