Robert Manton Kunhardt, 77, died May 13, 1997, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Born Oct. 3, 1919, in New York City, Robert lived in Greenwich, Conn., during most of his childhood. He retired from the U.S. Navy on Dec. 31, 1965, and then worked for the civil service until 1974. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1943 and captain of the sailing team. During World War II, he served on four patrols, including service on the submarine USS SawFish and later the USS Bergall. In later years, he was commander on the Casa Grande out of Little Creek, Norfolk.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Kunhardt; three children, Lynn K. Krall, Robert Kunhardt Jr. and David L. Kunhardt; two sisters, Cynthia Almgren and Katharne Weiss; a brother, Henry W. Kunhardt; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the home of the deceased. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
