Firefighters rescue mother and daughter from apartment fire

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue a child from the second story of one of four Level Green apartments that were damaged during an early morning blaze Tuesday, fire officials said.

No one was injured during the 3:30 a.m. blaze at the Indian Creek Apartments, said Capt. Murrey Loflin, fire department spokesman.

The child's mother also was rescued by firefighters. The mother and daughter were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

It took about 25 minutes for firefighters to put out the fire. Loflin said the fire caused between $75,000 and $100,000 in damage. It was sparked by an electrical short circuit in a common area on the first floor of the building, he said.

Low-flow toilets donated for use in needy complex

On Friday, Roto Rooter will install 30 low-flow toilets at the Williams Village Apartment complex as part of a community water conservation project. Roto Rooter is donating the toilets as well as the manpower for installation.

Williams Village is a Section 8 (subsidized) housing complex.

The new low-flow toilets will save the complex about 450,000 gallons of water a year.

The Virginia Beach Office of Permits and Inspections and the Waste Services Division will provide additional services in support of the project. The event is being coordinated by the Hampton Roads Water Efficiency Team.
