TWO SAILORS INJURED IN LATEST WORRELL LEG

Two hospitalized sailors, two broken boats and an eighth consecutive win highlighted action Tuesday in the Worrell 1000 ocean catamaran race to Virginia Beach.

Continuing to sail at a record pace, Team Chick's Beach and sailors Randy Smyth and Jason Sneed of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., won the 83.7-mile leg from Myrtle Beach, S.C., in 5 hours, 58 minutes, 21 seconds, averaging just under 14 mph.

Tuesday's race, sailed in turbulent seas and a 20-25-mph south wind, took its toll in both men and boats.

John McLaughlin of Baltimore and Team Pomodoro was treated for a deep knee cut and Martin Peacey of Indialantic, Fla., and Team Nokia broke his wrist.

Pomororo, skippered by Han Meijer of Virginia Beach, the only Virginia resident in the field, remains fourth overall, trailing No. 2 Team Rudee's Restaurant and No. 3 Team Holland.

Four legs remain, to Atlantic Beach, Cape Hatteras and Kill Devil Hills, all in North Carolina, and the finale Saturday to 25th Street at Virginia Beach.
