RUTH L. PARKER

Ruth Lyon Parker, one of 16 children of Matthew Daniel and Susie Harling Lyon, was born on June 22, 1897, and died May 13, 1997, in a local nursing home.

She was the widow of Francis Allison Parker with whom she owned, published and was editor of the Prentiss Headlight, Prentiss, Miss. She had resided in Virginia Beach since August of 1984.

Mrs. Parker is survived by a daughter, Mary Kathryn Boyd and her son-in-law, George T. Boyd, presently serving as pastor of Virginia Heights Baptist Church, Norfolk; two granddaughters, Kathryn Boyd Cronauer of Virginia Beach and Dr. Mary R. Boyd of Columbia, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, and Mary Allyson Cronauer of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mary Lyon Timmerman of Edgefield, S.C.

Mrs. Parker received many awards in recognition of her editorial contributions to local and national affairs, and for her personal involvement in civic affairs. She was the author of a cookbook entitled Down Home Cooking.

Visitation will be at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Burial will be in Prentiss at 11 a.m. Monday.
