THOMAS J. HARRIS

Thomas Jefferson ``Jep'' Harris, 95, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, in a Chesapeake hospital.

Mr. Harris, a native of Kitty Hawk, N.C., was retired after 30 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard, having served as chief of the Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station and the Kill Devil Hills Station. He was also a charter boat captain for 25 years for the Ella-M and the Ranger. Mr. Harris was a veteran, having served during World War II, and was a Primitive Baptist. He was the son of the late Sylvanious and Ellen Beacham Harris and the husband of the late Fannie Dowdy Harris. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Lizzie Tillett Harris.

Mr. Harris is survived by a daughter, Kathleen H. Gantt of Kitty Hawk; four grandchildren, Richard ``Dickie'' Gantt and Thomas ``Tommy'' Gantt, both of Kitty Hawk, Sandra Callis of Ahoskie and Karen Gray of Kitty Hawk; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with military rites will be held at Austin Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Clinton Hardee officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Funeral Home, Manteo, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. The family will also be receiving friends at the home, 734 W. Kitty Hawk Road, at other times. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
