ERNEST C. REED JR.

Dr. Ernest C. Reed Jr., retired U.S. Navy Captain M.C., 66, died May 17, 1997 at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.

Dr. Reed was born March 10, 1931, in Oak Park, Ill., son of the late Ernest C. Reed, M.D. and Flora Belt-Reed. He was a gentle, caring, sharing, loving, goodhearted person, who dedicated his life to helping his patients, his colleagues, his family and other people.

He was a graduate of Dayton Fairview High School, Dayton, Ohio, Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago.

He served his country for over 20 years in the U.S. Navy, for which he recieved many honors, including Bronze Star with Combat V, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation and Campaign Medal.

After retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1984, he served as a medical director, National Medical Enterprizes, New Beginnings/Serenity Lodge in Chesapeake; medical consultant for the City of Virginia Beach Alcohol Social Detoxification Center, and a staff physician at Hampton Health Department.

His memberships included American College of Physicians, American College of Preventative Medicine, American Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association, American Medical Society on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependencies, The Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S. and many state and local societies wherever he served.

Survivors include his loving wife, Renata Ne Fischer-Reed; two daughters, Carin Gaupties of Augsburg, Germany, and Susanne Sanner of Amsterdam, Holland; a sister, Ruth Ellen Reed of Dayton, Ohio, and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 22, until time for the memorial service at 6 p.m. at the Open Door Chapel, 3177 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, with a Navy chaplain officiating. Burial will be at sea with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the Open Door Chapel, 3177 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va. 23452; Salvation Army, 203 W. 19th St., Norfolk, Va. 23517 or the Navy Relief Society, 7920 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, Va. 23505.
