PRINCESS ANNE GIRLS OUST KECOUGHTAN ON A PAIR OF GOALS IN FINAL MINUTES

VIRGINIA BEACH - In case Princess Anne knew little about Kecougtan, it knows more now.

The Cavaliers scored twice in the game's final minutes Monday night to defeat the Warriors 3-1 in an Eastern Region girls soccer quarterfinal that neither reflected the Cavaliers' dominance nor gave recognition to how close Kecoughtan came to pulling one of the biggest upsets in region playoff history.

Princess Anne's Amy Caddies broke ties twice in the second half, scoring on a kick eight yards in front of the net midway through the second half, and again with less than 10 minutes remaining with another close range kick which caught the top of the net.

Kecoughtan (9-1-3) had scored its lone goal at the game's 60-minute mark, when Erin Hebert rebounded a deflected shot into the Cavalier net to tie the score.

``We were frustrated (with the trouble scoring) in the first half'' Caddies said. ``It was a big relief once I finally scored.''

Liz Porter added a goal in the game's waning seconds to finish the scoring for Princess Anne, which plays Maury in a regional semifinal Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Salem.

Maury 5, Western Branch 1

VIRGINIA BEACH - For the second straight year, the Commodores struggled in the first half against a first-round opponent. For the second straight year, they figured it out in the second half.

Amy Mayer scored twice as part of a three-goals-in-five-minutes outburst for Maury (16-1), which scored four times in the second half in routing the Bruins and advancing to a semifinal date with Princess Anne at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salem.

The score was tied at 1-1 when Janet Blevens netted a goal in the game's 50th minute. Mayer headed a corner kick into the Bruin goal in the game's 53th minute, then struck again two minutes later.

``It takes some getting used to, when you're in a close game for the first time in a while,'' said Meyer on her team's early struggles. ``In the second half, we just stepped up our game and applied more defensive pressure.''

Kempsville 11, Menchville 1

HAMPTON - The Peninsula District champion Monarchs (10-2-1) were no match for the Rafal sisters and the Beach District runnerup Chiefs (12-4-2).

Senior Lauren Rafal scored four goals and assisted on another while sophomore Jessica Rafal added two goals and three assists as Kempsville rolled into Wednesday's 5:30 p.m. semifinal meeting at Salem against Great Bridge.

``The team played well as a team and that's what got us going,'' said Lauren Rafal, who needed only a minute and 10 seconds to open the scoring. ``I had a lot of time to do the things I wanted to do and that made it easier.''

Kempsville coach Ed Hackett said he didn't know much about Menchville before the game and wasn't sure what kind of a game the Chiefs were in for.

``We were a little scared because of their record,'' he said. ``But we got off to a good start and that took off the pressure.''

Any hope Menchville had of getting into the game in the second half were ended when Katie Johnson 32 seconds after intermission to make it 6-1.

Great Bridge 3, Churchland 0

HAMPTON - Although the Southeastern District champion Wildcats dominated play and outshot the Eastern District runnerups 17-4, it was scoreless at the half of a game that was played in 90 degree-plus heat.

The Wildcats dominated the entire game, outshooting the Truckers 17-4, but it was scoreless at the half.

Kia Bell finally scored the only goal Great Bridge (13-2) would need about two minutes into the second half. She collected a crossing pass that deflected off K.C. Miller and kicked the ball in from about five yards out. Miller and Beth Garzon added goals later in the game.

Bell said the heat and a lack of execution by the Wildcats enabled Churchland (9-7-1) to stay in the game.

``We weren't putting shots away, toward the end we finally did it,'' she said. ``And a lot of people were sick and worn down by the heat. But we're a second half team, it's been like that all season.''
