DAVID E. HARTIGAN JR.

Retired Army Col. David E. Hartigan Jr., 68, of the 1300 block of Glyndon Drive, died in his home after a long illness. He was born in St. Joseph, Mo., and was predeceased by his father, David E. Hartigan.

Col. Hartigan retired from the Army in 1978 with 30 years of distinguished service. After retirement he worked for VSE Corporation, Chesapeake, as a contract administrator.

While in the Army he served in the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense, the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the War Plans Division, U.S. Continental Army Command, Fort Monroe, Va.

In Vietnam, Col. Hartigan saw active duty as commanding officer of the 1st Battalion (Mechanized) 61st Infantry, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized). He also served as executive officer/deputy commanding officer 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Mobile).

During his career he also served as assistant professor of military science at his alma mater, Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.; as instructor/adviser to the Burmese Army Parachute training school in Rangoon, Burma, and also served in Headquarters U.S. European Command Paris, France, and Stuttgart, Germany.

Col. Hartigan was a graduate of Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., Infantry OSC (where he later was inducted into the Hall of Fame), Fort Benning, Ga., Ranger School, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Armed Forces Staff College, and U.S. Naval War College.

He was recipient of the Silver Star, Legion of Merit (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), Air Medal (16 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Republic of Vietnam, Cross of Gallantry (Gold Star), Federal Republic of Germany Cross of Merit.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Hartigan of St. Joseph, Mo.; his wife, Eileen Hartigan of Virginia Beach; his son, David E. Hartigan III of Oakton, Va.; his daughters, Amy Talton of Vienna, Va., and Mary Katherine Simone of Margate, Fla.; and a stepson, Donald Breslin of Virginia Beach; three stepdaughters, Sharon Young of Frankfurt, Germany, Kathleen Breslin of Suffolk, Erin Wicks of Chesapeake. He is also survived by nine grandchildren. His two brothers are Dr. John Hartigan of Omaha, Neb., William Hartigan of Duluth, Ga., and his sister is Virginia Brandt of Prairie Village, Kansas.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by Fr. Timothy Drake at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Sandra Lane, Virginia Beach, at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive relatives and friends in the commons area of St. Matthew's Church from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to the Mass. Burial will be at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, May 22, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the American Heart Association or Boys Town, Boys Town, Neb. 68010.
