MELVIN E. SPENCE

Melvin E. Spence, 91, of Virginia Beach, a retired farmer, died May 19, 1997, in a Virginia Beach hospital.

Mr. Spence was a native of Columbia, N.C. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. He was the son of the late W.D. Spence and Emma Dillion Spence and was predeceased by a grandson, David Paul Brumley.

Survivors include his wife, Ione B. Spence; one son, E. Ronald Spence and his wife, Anna M. Spence; a daughter, Judy S. Brumley and her husband, Paul C. Brumley, all of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, W. Carson Spence of Virginia Beach, Patrick N. Brumley and his wife, Karen W. Brumley of Chesapeake; a granddaughter, Jill Brumley Sarver and her husband, James W. Sarver of Virginia Beach; five great-grandchildren, Judson Sarver, Tiffany Brumley, Sarah Brumley, Berend Sarver, Patrick N. Brumley Jr.; two sisters, Beatrice Vaughan of Bloomington, Ind., Leneve Kay of Chesapeake; and a brother, W.R. Spence of Rocky Mount, N.C.

A chapel service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Brewer. Burial will be at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at their home, 700 Princess Anne Road, today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Building Fund or Creeds Rescue Squad.
