EULA P. JOHNSON

Eula Gladys Piland Johnson, 92, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 20, 1904, in Gates County, N.C., and lived most of her early life in Isle of Wight County. Throughout her life, she remained a member of Uzzell Methodist Church, Isle of Wight Methodist Church Circuit.

Following their marriage, Gladys and Herbert lived in Nansemond County where they raised their five children. For the past 11 years, she made her home with her daughter, Dorothy Ann Davis of Franklin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Quinton Piland and Mary Elisa Pierce Piland and her husband, Herbert Clifton Johnson. Also preceding her in death were three brothers and six sisters, George Washington Piland, Richard Roland Piland, Martin Luther Piland, Harriett Elizabeth Piland, Ophelia Piland Whitley, Hilda Ruth Piland, Thelma Piland Johnson, Eunice Piland Eure and Dorothy Piland Darden; son, David Dalton Johnson; and a grandson, Michael Lynn Johnson.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert Clifton and Georgia Johnson of Suffolk, and Alan Carroll and Lynn Johnson of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy Ann Davis of Franklin and Mary Elizabeth and Joseph Shumate of Wytheville, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk.

The funeral service, as requested by Gladys, will be a celebration of life and a message of hope.

Officiating will be the Rev. Joseph Shumate, retired pastor of the Walker Mountain Lutheran Parish in Wythe County, Va., and current chaplain at Wythe County Community Hospital. Assisting will be the Rev. John R. Jones, pastor of Uzzell Methodist Church, Isle of Wight United Methodist Church Circuit.

The funeral will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Harrell Funeral Home Chapel, Suffolk. Committal will be beside her late husband, Herbert Clifton Johnson, in the Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery, Southampton County.
