MILESTONES

VIRGINIA BEACH

Rebecca Harvey, principal of Thoroughgood Elementary School, has been elected president of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals and was recognized during the association's spring conference at the Cavalier Hotel.

Harvey, who will begin her term July 1, has served on the association's board of directors since 1991. She also has served as Tidewater Zone director and as federal relations coordinator for the association.

Harvey started teaching sixth grade at Windsor Oaks Elementary in 1972, became an assistant principal in 1984, worked in the central office as special education administrative coordinator in 1987, then in 1989 became principal at Thoroughgood.

Also, during the spring conference of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals, four Virginia Beach principals received Bell Awards for their contributions to their schools and systems. They are Don Clement of Centerville Elementary, Nancy Davenport of Kingston Elementary, Linda Hayes of Lynnhaven Elementary and Betsy Taylor of John B. Dey Elementary.

Richard T. Cheng of Virginia Beach has been named to the board of directors of the Innovative Technology Authority by Gov. George F. Allen.

Cheng is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Eastern Computers Inc. and is senior consultant of the National Computer Network for the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He received his bachelor's degree from National Taiwan Normal University, a master's degree from both the University of Wisconsin-Menomonie and the University of Illinois-Urbana, and holds a doctorate from the University of Illinois-Urbana.

He is also an adjunct professor of computer sciences at Old Dominion University.

Dr. Clarke Russ has been named to the Board of Health Professionals by Gov. George F. Allen.

Russ, the retired president of Virginia Beach Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, received his bachelor's degree from Colgate University and his medical degree from Albany Medical College.

A resident of Virginia Beach, Russ is also chairman of the advisory board of the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and the sports medicine advisor for Little Leagues of America for Virginia.

NORFOLK

Lucia Treto, a junior at Granby High School, has been accepted into the 1997 Internet Explorers Internship Program at Iowa University.

In the internship this summer, Treto will spend eight weeks creating an Internet package aimed at educating middle-school girls in math, science and engineering.

Treto is one of only 20 high school girls across the nation accepted into the program. The two sponsors for the internship, the Program for Women in Science and Engineering and the College of Engineering at Iowa State University, will pay Treto a stipend of $1,500.

She'll work an average of 40 hours a week, attend weekly seminars, write a paper and present a project at the end of the internship. In the fall, she also must present her work at Granby High.

PORTSMOUTH

Reggie Williams, 13, a Churchland Middle School student, was one of three students statewide to be honored in the Virginia School Board Association Tidewater Regional Art Contest.

Williams' autumn still life drawn with pastels will be framed and displayed in the association's Charlottesville office.

The VSBA Regional Art Contest, started in 1989, promotes the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
