LOCAL SCENE

NORFOLK THREE JOIN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM: Clark Nexsen named R. Charles Brown and Tom Borkowski mechanical engineers and David J. Monoit, a staff architect. Brown joins the company after 32 years of civil service with the Atlantic Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Borkowski was facilities design engineer with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Monoit was previously a project architect with Dills Ainscough Duff Architects.

OUTSTANDING ACCOUNTING EDUCATOR: The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants named Douglas E. Ziegenfuss the society's 1997 outstanding accounting educator. He is an associate professor at Old Dominion University and a member of the accounting organization's Tidewater chapter.

DEVINE WINS AWARD: Dr. Charles J. Devine Jr., who was active in the founding of Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as its first chairman of urology, was presented the prestigious Ramon Guiteras Award by the American Urological Association in recognition of his contributions in the field. Devine, who retired from clinical practice in 1991, is the 35th physician in the nation to receive the award.

SAMMONS AND DELA CRUZ NAMED: David M. Sammons was named a principal with Stroud, Pence & Associates. He was formerly senior associate and project engineer with the firm. Also, Tony Dela Cruz was named CADD coordinator.

SHUTTLEWORTH IN MILLION DOLLAR ADVOCATES FORUM: Attorney Thomas B. Shuttleworth has become certified as a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Membership is limited to trial lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill, experience and excellence in advocacy by achieving a verdict or settlement in the amount of $1 million or more.

VIRGINIA

HEARN ON FURNITURE ASSOCIATION BOARD: Craig M. Hearn, president of Hearn Furniture Sales in Smithfield, was elected to the advisory council of past presidents on the board of directors of the International Wholesale Furniture Association.
