ETHEL S. GOODOWNS

Ethel S. Goodowns, 88, formerly of the 2900 block of S. Military Highway, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in a Chesapeake hospital.

Mrs. Goodowns was born in Blackshear, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Susie Rice Altman and the widow of Jefferson A. Goodowns. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Peggy Earley. Mrs. Goodowns was a retired beautician and owner of Ethel's Beauty Salon. She was also the former owner of Goodowns' Variety Store, and served as the first postmistress of the Broadmoor Post Office. She was a charter member of Evangelical Presbyterian Church, former president of the Women of the Church, a choir member and a Sunday School teacher. Other memberships include Happy Acres Garden Club and the National Campers and Hikers Association.

Survivors include her grandson and his wife, James N. Earley II and Phyllis R. Earley; her great-grandchildren, Alacia L. Earley and B. Nathan Earley, all of Fairfax, Va.; a stepdaughter, Helen Mason of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Chesapeake. Interment will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends in Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 3 to 5 p.m. today. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
