STATUS REPORT: CHESAPEAKE CITY JAIL ADDITION

An dedication ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday for the five-story addition to the City Jail at Albemarle and Holt drives in the municipal complex at Great Bridge. The addition will add room for up to 320 inmates and 90 staff members; today the jail has room for 213 inmates and 96 staff members, said Lt. Col. David Newby of the city's Sheriff's Department. A separate, 72-bed addition housing work-program prisoners and costing about $1.6 million should be completed later this summer. The 150,000-square-foot facility will use a design called direct supervision, which places deputies' stations at the center of pods of inmate rooms.

Cost: $37.9 million
