MELVIN R. MILLER

The Rev. Melvin Ray ``Smut'' Miller, 72, of the 1600 block of Virginia Road died June 2, 1997, at his home.

A native of Chowan County, Rev. Miller was a son of the late Walter Levi Miller and Mrs. Bailey Tynch Miller of Edenton. He was the husband of Joan Lee Crosby Miller of Edenton.

Rev. Miller was retired from the U.S. Air Force and owned and operated Miller's Auto Repair before entering into the ministry. He attended Heritage Baptist University, Wichita, Kan., and was most recently pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Creswell. He was also a volunteer chaplain of Chowan Hospital.

Surviving other than his wife are four daughters, Micky Gardner of Old Fort, N.C., Marty Farmer and C.J. McQueen, both of Edenton, Dianne Farence of Kodiac, Ala.; a son, Walter L. Miller of Coldwater, Miss; two sisters, Bert White and Elmira Ward, both of Edenton; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracy Miller, and a brother, Elton Miller.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Evans Funeral Home by the Rev. Randy Green. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Albemarle Hospice. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
