JOYCE U. BAINES

Joyce Umphlette Baines, 63, of the 400 block of Sherwood Drive, a devoted wife of 45 years and a loving mother and grandmother, died June 2, 1997, in her residence.

A homemaker, she was a native of Gates County, N.C., and a member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Shade Umphlette and Nora Robertson Umphlette and was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Kaye Baines.

Survivors include her husband, J. Irving Baines; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie Baines and husband, William R. Cochran of Suffolk and Pamela Sue Baines and husband, Mark A. Cornell of Carrsville, Va.; two sisters, Margaret U. Warren of Minerva, Ohio, and Elizabeth Carolyn Smith of Suffolk; three brothers, E. Douglas Umphlette of Suffolk, Wallace Umphlette of Suffolk and Clarence W. Umphlette of Windsor; two grandchildren, Clinton Blake Cochran of Suffolk and Stephanie Nicole Cornell of Carrsville; four step-grandchildren, Mark, Marie, Michael and Katy.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Revs. Larry D. Renfrow and Luther M. Marks. Burial will be in Whaleyville United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. and at other times in the residence. Memorials may be made to Whaleyville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O.
