SPSA reduces rates
at its local facility
transfer stations
On May 28, the Southeastern Public Service Authority approved a staff-recommended tipping fee reduction for commercial processable solid waste delivered to several SPSA transfer stations. The reduction will go into effect July 1.
Processable waste is waste generated by businesses such as banks, restaurants, hotels, office buildings and retail establishments that is capable of being processed into fuel at SPSA's waste-to-energy plant.
The fees for commercial processable waste will be reduced from the $48.50/ton disposal rate to the following fees:
Chesapeake Transfer Station, $29/ton
Norfolk Transfer Station, $30/ton
Landstown Transfer Station, $31.50/ton
Oceana Transfer Station, $32.50/ton
Isle of Wight Transfer Station, $36.50/ton

Agency begins spraying
to tackle mosquito crop
The city's Mosquito Control Commissions have begun spraying to exterminate this season's crop of the pesky insects. Spraying will continue through October.
Chesapeake residents who have particular problems should call the commission in their area of the city: 558-0917 in Deep Creek; 547-9264 in Great Bridge; 545-4749 in South Norfolk; 547-9264 in Washington Borough; or 484-7617 in Western Branch.
Mosquito control officials say residents can reduce the mosquito problem by ridding their yards of standing water, where the insects breed.

Cancer specialist launches
lecture program at EVMS
A nationally known cancer specialist will help launch a new lecture program at Eastern Virginia Medical School that honors Harry H. Mansbach, one of the prime forces behind the school's establishment.
Dr. Robert J. Mayer, chief of the division of clinical oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, will speak Monday in the Hofheimer Hall Auditorium.
Before Mayer's 5 p.m. lecture on management of colorectal cancer, a reception will be held at 4 p.m. in honor of Mansbach. Both events are free and open to the public.
The Harry H. Mansbach Endowed Lectureship was established last year by Mansbach's children as an 85th birthday tribute to their father. Mansbach, a lawyer, civic leader and philanthropist, was a member of the committee that laid the groundwork for EVMS in the 1960s. From 1970 to 1973, he helped lead a fund drive that raised more than $17 million to establish EVMS.
