4 REPUBLICANS COMPETE FOR NOD TO RUN FOR STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL

Polls will be open today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. to allow Virginians to decide who should represent their party in a number of races in Hampton Roads and across the state.

Two local politicians are among four Republicans vying for their party's nod to represent the GOP in November's attorney general race. The field includes Sen. Mark L. Earley, a lawyer from Chesapeake; Sen. Kenneth W. Stolle, a lawyer from Virginia Beach; Gilbert K. Davis, a lawyer from Herndon, and Jerry W. Kilgore, a lawyer from Gate City.

This is the only statewide primary race on the ballots.

Republicans in Norfolk and Virginia Beach will have an opportunity to select candidates for commissioner of revenue.

In Norfolk, three men are seeking the GOP nomination for commissioner of revenue. They are Charles E. ``Charlie'' Gibson, who retired after 36 years working in the commissioner's office; Robert A. ``Bob'' Smith, a customer service specialist for Household Credit Services; and Neal S. Windley, a retired Norfolk assistant city manager.

In Virginia Beach, two GOP hopefuls are running for the right to be the party's candidate for commissioner of revenue. They are Rickie L. Richards, an accountant with Virginia Beach's city finance department; and Henry H. Richardson III, a resort hotel owner.

There also are three House of Delegates primaries today.

In parts of Suffolk, Chesapeake and Isle of Wight County, Republicans and Democrats are having separate primaries to decide who will replace Robert E. Nelms in the 76th District. Voters will be allowed to cast ballots in only one party's primary.

Running in the GOP primary are Suffolk Councilman S.C. ``Chris'' Jones, owner of a pharmacy; Amos D. Neill, a retired mortician; and Betty Jolly ``Kitty'' Perkinson, anassociate professor at Tidewater Community College.

Seeking the Democratic Party's nod are Michelle Degnan, a teacher at Western Branch High School in Chesapeake, and Charles Parr, general manager of funeral homes in Suffolk.

Democrats also get to select their candidate in the 75th House District, which covers Franklin and other parts of Western Tidewater. Running are M. Maughrine Brown, a Surry lawyer, and Del. J. Paul Councill Jr., a farmer and retired businessman.
